2008 Marching Band Theme – “Latin Fusion” |
|
The theme
of the 2008 Yorktown Marching Patriots’ show is “Latin Fusion,”
taking the rich harmonies and colorful musical textures of various
Latin Jazz musicians and fusing them together into a dynamic marching
show.
1. One More Time, Chuck Corea –
Originally written by Gene Puerling as a simultaneous tribute to both
trumpet player Chuck Mangione (of Yorktown Marching Patriots 2004
show fame) and jazz pianist Chick Corea (of Yorktown Marching
Patriots 2008 show fame), One More Time, Chuck Corea was first
bought to the marching world by the 1982 Concord Blue Devils Drum
Corps. This exciting piece serves as a fitting opener, fusing ideas
from both Mangione and Corea into a fast-paced musical statement.
2. Spain – Our second piece,
written by the aforementioned Chick Corea and recorded on his band
Return to Forever’s critically-acclaimed Light as a Feather
album, has served as a jazz standard from the moment it debuted in
1971. Featuring a lyrical quotation of Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto
de Aranjuez, Spain quickly descends into an energeticmusical
experience and transitions to our next song via a dynamic percussion solo
section.
3. Dindi – Closing with an
Antonio Carlos Jobim standard, famously recorded by Frank Sinatra,
this piece will highlight the sonority, dexterity, and power of the
Yorktown Marching Patriots. Sweeping harmonies and soft bossa nova
rhythms transition to a fast-paced, driving finale.
