Dear Band Families,
As we near the end of October, marching season is coming to a close. That means we will be shifting our focus to indoor activities soon. In preparation, please help this Wednesday morning to get our students fitted for their concert attire. There are morning and lunch-hour time-slots available. The weather is looking gorgeous for Wednesday evening’s Arlington Marching Showcase at Wakefield. This is a great way to see the show locally without the noise of football-goers. Finally, after a long weekend at assessment (still looking for volunteers), take a night off for dinner at Deli Italiano on Sunday to benefit Yorktown Band (4-9PM). Dine in or carry out – just tell your cashier you are supporting “Yorktown Band” or use code YBAND online.
TL;DR:

- Volunteer Spotlight: Concert Concessions – what does it take?
Arlington Marching Showcase
On Wednesday we’ll join Washington-Liberty and Wakefield High Schools for the Arlington Marching Showcase (band schedule). This fabulous event has all three schools presenting field shows as well as bands from each middle school in the stands showing off their stand tune skills. It’s a great community event as well as a way to showcase marching band to future students (and show off to old friends at different schools). It’s also the best opportunity to see “Red” locally without the noisy, football-game atmosphere. We have MANY volunteer slots available. Note that it is possible with this event to sign up for bus rider and props slots simultaneously as we’ll be able to cover the students when you move to the field duties. Sign up to help
Assessment – Your Last Chance to see “Red” in Competition Format
The final competition atmosphere performance of “Red” by the Yorktown Marching Band will be at the VBODA Assessment on Saturday, October 28 (band schedule). This competition-like atmosphere requires our full cadre of volunteers to make sure the students look their best and get those high “effect” scores. Sign up to help
Senior Night
Senior Night for the Class of 2024 band members and their families will take place at the last home football game, November 3. We are looking for a few parents to help with set-up (3:30 pm – 5:00 pm), clean-up (6:00-7:00 pm), and baking. Please contact Susie Wallin to volunteer or for more details. Let’s make this a special occasion for our seniors and their parents.
Volunteer Spotlight – Concert Concessions*
* A new rotating feature highlighting one of our wonderful volunteers
The concert concessions coordinator works with our volunteer coordinator to create sign-ups for each of our major concerts for the concert band and wind ensemble. The coordinator also arranges tables with the school facilities managers. On concert evenings, the coordinator supervises the concessions tables with volunteer assistance. Concessions are donated and then “sold” before, at intermission, and after performances. No prices are determined but goods are exchanged for any size donation.
- Current Coordinator: Vacant (filled by Lisa Backer temporarily)
- Total Time Commitment: A few hours of preparation for concerts in December, February, and May.
- Interaction with Students: None
- Interested? Contact us to find out what’s involved, shadow along for a concert, or assist the current coordinator.
Thank you for supporting your musicians and go band!
